![]() However, the aquifers are found to be in redox disequilibria with multiple overlapping redox zones as indicated by the co-presence of multiple redox-sensitive solutes. The reducing nature of groundwater within the delta is also indicated by the prevalence of CH 4 and S 2− coupled with low dissolved oxygen content ( Mukherjee and Fryar, 2008). The groundwater is mostly found to be postoxic in nature, and Fe(II)/Fe(III) is found to be the most predominant redox couple within the aquifers. Fe–S–C redox cycles strongly controls the aquifer redox states across the delta. The aquifer redox states within the GBM river delta are found to be concurrently controlled by multiple geochemical processes that are hydrostratigraphy and depth dependent ( Mukherjee and Fryar, 2008). The solute concentrations are found to vary with depth, for example, Fe, Mn, and SO 4 2− concentrations are found to decrease with depth, while CH 4 shows an increasing trend ( Mukherjee and Fryar, 2008). On average, the delta groundwater is also characterized by the dominant presence of Fe and Mn as minor solutes along with a very low concentration of SO 4 2− and NO 3 − and undetectable levels of NO 2 − and H 2S ( Mukherjee and Fryar, 2008 Mukherjee et al., 2008). These highly brackish/saline waters represent entrapped seawater from the proto-BoB, which have undergone limited diagenetic evolution through interaction with aquifer sediments and fresher groundwater leakage ( Mukherjee and Fryar, 2008). The isolated aquifer lenses majorly host connate waters dominated by Na + and Cl − ions. The semiconfined and poorly connected aquifers show significantly higher proportions of brackish/saline water with a higher concentration of Na + and Cl − ions indicating contribution from marine source (i.e., BoB). The multilayered aquifer system to the south shows a somewhat varied hydrogeochemical signature, broadly falling within the Ca–Na–HCO 3 −–Cl − facies. The HCO 3 − ions are believed to be majorly derived from silicate weathering and oxidation of organic matter along with carbonate dissolution and root respiration ( Mukherjee and Fryar, 2008). The Ca 2+ ions are suggested to be introduced into the groundwater majorly through carbonate dissolution, while the Mg 2+ ions are derived from both carbonate dissolution and silicate weathering. The unconfined continuous main aquifer system to the north of the delta is mostly dominated by Ca–HCO 3 −-rich groundwater, with the predominance of Ca + and Mg + and HCO 3 − ions as major solutes. The multi-depth hierarchical groundwater flow system within the delta has resulted in highly heterogeneous hydrogeochemical signatures that vary both spatially and vertically across the GBM River delta.Ī total of seven distinct hydrogeochemical facies have been reported from the GBM river delta (namely, Ca 2+–HCO 3, Ca 2+–Na +–HCO 3, Na +–Ca 2+–HCO 3, Ca 2+–Na +–HCO 3–Cl, Na +–Cl–HCO 3, Na +–Cl, and Ca 2+–Cl), which were found to vary both spatially and vertically ( Mukherjee and Fryar, 2008). The groundwater in the main aquifer undergoes hydrogeochemical evolution along the groundwater flow paths by water–sediment interactions that are majorly dominated by carbonate dissolution and cation exchange along with a substantial influence of silicate weathering processes, all of which are guided by the aquifer redox states ( Mukherjee and Fryar, 2008). A significant fraction of the groundwater is also recharged as the irrigation return flow through the extensive stretches of agricultural fields that are cultivated using water-intensive irrigation practices. The shallow aquifers are dominated by relatively young groundwater that bears groundwater isotopic (δ 18O ) signature of meteoric recharge coupled with some meteoric diagenesis and evaporation loss ( Mukherjee, 2006 Mukherjee et al., 2007b). The groundwater chemistry of the GBM River delta aquifer system is controlled by the hydrostratigraphy and the groundwater flow paths and hence varies across the delta. Brazil had been finalists in the past three major international tournaments (20 Olympics 2007 World Cup), but had yet to win a championship. Brazil also featured reigning five time Fifa Women's World Player of the Year, Marta. Coming into the match, the USA had never failed to advance to the semifinal round in (women's) world cup history. Brazil had annihilated the USA in the previous world cup (2007), handing the USA their worst defeat in the history of the program: 4–0 in the semifinal. Perhaps the second most influential victory came on July 10, 2011, in the quarterfinal of the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany, where the U.S. Chastain famously dropped to her knees and whipped off her shirt, celebrating in her sports bra, which later made the cover of Sports Illustrated and the front pages of newspapers around the country and world. She scored and won the game for the United States. With Briana Scurry's save of China's third kick, the score was 4–4 with only Brandi Chastain left to shoot. After a back and forth game, the score was tied 0–0 at full-time, and remained so after extra time, leading to a penalty kick shootout. On July 10, 1999, over 90,000 people (the largest ever for a women's sporting event and one of the largest attendances in the world for a tournament game final) filled the Rose Bowl to watch the United States play China in the Final. With this win they emerged onto the world stage and brought significant media attention to women's soccer and athletics. It came when they defeated China 5–4 in a penalty shoot-out following a 0–0 draw after extended time. This 1999 World Cup final match was arguably the USWNT's most influential and memorable victory. Introduce your audience to the wonders of the park with “Central Park New York” by The Wiggles. Travel to this beautiful NYC locale with these uptown suggestions. With expansive grasses, a glistening lake and enough paths to run a marathon, no other city has a place quite like Central Park-an oasis in the center of a roaring metropolis. Include your audience: Pass out giant foam fingers and let them go nuts during the applause! Whether you cheer for the Rangers or Islanders, no hockey game is complete without Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” Stock up on black-tooth makeup to complete your players’ toothless grins, and don’t forget about those standard hockey-player black eyes. Try 2 Unlimited’s “Get Ready for This,” from ESPN Presents: Jock Jams, Volume 1, or Quad City DJ’s “Space Jam” to get the crowd riled up. Use red-white-and-blue–starred basketballs, and practice cool tricks à la the Harlem Globetrotters. Is that Spike Lee in the front row watching your Knicks routine? Dress your dancers in blue and orange and create a funky dance-team-esque routine in homage to the Knicks City Dancers. Sure, Fosse’s Damn Yankees is actually about the Washington Senators, but if your musical theater dancers really sell it in “Heart,” does it matter? Use Tyce Diorio’s choreography to “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO” on “So You Think You Can Dance” as inspiration. End the battle by bringing out a tapper in Red Sox garb-everyone can agree to gang up on Boston! Mets or Yankees? Queens or the Bronx? Create your own Subway Series and have your tap students battle it out to original team theme songs: “Meet the Mets,” by Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz, and “Here Come the Yankees,” by Bob Bundin and Lou Stallman. Set up a desk downstage, and have two sports anchors introduce the upcoming numbers to provide entertainment during set changes. Kick off the scene with the theme from ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” Dads will love it and the clear “da, da, da-da, da, da” synthesized melody will make it easy for even your youngest dancers to find the beat. Here are a few ideas to bring the heat to your recital stage. And recreational sports like street hockey and wall ball are fixtures on neighborhood blocks. But don’t forget to think outside the big arenas: the New York City Marathon’s course twists through all five boroughs, and the US Open takes place in Queens. New York is home to nine major sports teams, each with diehard fans. “King Kong Song” by ABBA will make it fun and upbeat!Ĭelebrate the end of a busy workweek with a humorous hip-hop number to *NSYNC’s “Just Got Paid.” If you’re feeling really creative, use cardboard cutouts of buildings in the NYC skyline as props. Have a class with one boy? He can be the gigantic ape while the girls dance around him. When we think big-city skyscrapers, we think King Kong. Dresses and pearls, inspired by the 1950s, will get your ballerinas into character. And your tiniest tappers in suits and briefcases can keep the stock market above ground by incorporating hand signals from the trading floor to “Wall Street Shuffle,” by 10cc.Īlso, check out the instrumental soundtrack of the 2010 movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps or the Mad Men theme song (“A Beautiful Mine,” by RJD2) for lyrical or ballet numbers. Nothing says Wall Street quite like lots of money! Have little musical theater students greedily snatch moneybags from each other to “Money Makes the World Go Round,” from Cabaret. Try other transportation ideas with “Bus Song,” by The Kooks, or “Taxi Cab,” by the Naked Brothers Band. Songs like “Subway,” from “Sesame Street,” is great for younger dancers, or use “Take the A Train” for a more jazzy take. Set up chairs to look like an NYC subway car and have a teen class dance among them, imitating activities you might see on the train-reading the paper, listening to music or flirting with a stranger! Use scenes like this multiple times as you transition between city locations in your show. Time to head to the office-change scenery with a dance about the crowded morning commute. The audience will be clapping and singing along right from the beginning. A good game library may give you some of what Stencyl does for you, but it probably won’t do it all for you. You also have a lot of built in functionality, like collision detection, physics, drawing animations, etc, that you would need to write yourself, or use a library, in a text language. The drag-n-drop coding makes syntax errors almost impossible, meaning your code will usually run, even if it doesn’t do what you expect. Of course, whether it is or not depends a lot on what you’re trying to do with it, but it still gives you a lot over text coding. This may raise the question of why Stencyl is better than text-based coding. Stencyl provides you with a lot of flexibility and power, and the cost of that is complexity. There are a LOT of blocks, and a lot of ways to put blocks together that don’t do anything useful. Unlike Scratch, you probably aren’t going to be able to slap some blocks together and make something work. (The weren’t really around when I started teaching Stencyl a few years back.) This is really important, as Stencyl does have a bit of a learning curve. Stencyl does provide learning resources through the Stencylpedia, although I’ll admit I haven’t used them much. You can export an Actor using the button on the lower right. You can have as many scenes as you want, and then setup transitions between them using code.Īll the Actors in this game. Scenes can also have behaviors, for those things that don’t really belong on an actor. Stencyl also allows you to build levels, called “scenes”, and place your actors or elements from a tileset. You can then define behaviors for actors to make them actually do things. Once a sprite, called an “actor” or tileset is created, it’s not hard to give them physical properties, including friction. Basic game concepts like collisions, physics, and inputs are already built in to Stencyl. ![]() Stencyl will run on Windows, Mac, or Linux. The only limitation on the free version is that you can only publish games for the web (.swf format), and games have a Stencyl splash screen. The free version of Stencyl is not in any way limited in functionality from the Pro (paid) versions. I sometimes describe it as a cross between Scratch and Game Maker it has the lego-style coding blocks like Scratch, as well supporting common game making concepts like levels, sprites with animations and behaviors, tilesets, “solid” objects, basic physics, and the like.
